Together We Strive is an account of the evidence-based, innovative community and youth project created by NWAMI International Malta President, Maria-Gabriele Doublesin.
Using a systemic approach, the project introduces a novel approach to community-based project work that links social cohesion with environmental resilience.
By demonstrating how to break down social silos, this publication aims to promote community cohesion across all ages and cultures, social inclusion, and socio-economic stability; combats marginalisations, hate speech, and discrimination; and offers advice for adopting a sustainable lifestyle and developing environmental stewardship to combat climate change.
The book was funded by the Voluntary Organisations Project Scheme administered by the Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector and supported by the Ministry for Inclusion, Voluntary Organisations, and Consumer Rights as part of the project “Together We Strive: Creating a Sustainable Environment Free from Barriers that Divide” (MIVC). NWAMI International Malta (NIM), the Malta-based, independent European sister organisation of NWAMI UK (Networking for World Awareness of Multicultural Integration), seeks to promote intercultural dialogue by encouraging locals and migrants to engage with one another to overcome socio-cultural barriers, promotes environmental stewardship, and aims to foster a sense of friendship and inclusion through education, culture, and the arts.
Together We Strive is the result of NWAMI International Malta’s efforts to address the obstacles faced by marginalised local and migrant communities, who live on the margins of society and are an integral part of the social fabric of Malta.
NIM believes that intercultural dialogue necessitates interactions with individuals from various social and cultural contexts. This is why the author of this project felt it was important to address intercultural and sustainability issues in a novel and comprehensive manner by employing a systemic approach to intercultural and environmental issues. Primarily, by actively engaging local and immigrant youths with the objective of overcoming socio-cultural barriers, by working together to combat climate change, and thereby fostering a new sense of belonging.
This publication was written by Maria-Gabriele Doublesin and Mark Vella, who worked in close collaboration with the author throughout the project and edited by Gabriel Schembri. The book also provides a comprehensive summary of the research component of the project conducted by Lawrence Zammit, co-founder of MISCO Malta.
“Together We Strive” aims to contribute to capacity-building and can serve as an excellent resource for educators, community developers, policy writers, nonprofit organisations, and the public in general.
