NWAMI International Malta (NIM) is delighted to announce that our flagship project Foodwise Families has been awarded the inaugural National Sustainable Development Action Community Impact Award. The award, which was presented as part of the first ever Sustainable Development Action Awards, recognises the project’s exceptional contribution to social cohesion, cultural inclusion, and sustainable living across communities in Malta.
Foodwise Families is an educational, community-oriented initiative by NWAMI International Malta, with support from APS Bank, NONI Restaurant, and RMHC Learning Centre. The project has included a series of cooking workshops, bringing together children and parents from diverse backgrounds, where participants explore traditional recipes from Malta and around the world, while learning zero-waste cooking techniques.
By combining environmental awareness with intercultural exchange, Foodwise Families not only reduces food waste, but also fosters multicultural understanding, social inclusion, and community cohesion. Central to the initiative is a multicultural zero-waste cookbook curated for children, helping to instil sustainable habits from a young age.
The Community Impact Award recognises voluntary organisations whose initiatives deliver substantial positive social impact on local communities, engaging local stakeholders, addressing inequalities, and improving long-term well-being. By awarding Foodwise Families, the judges acknowledged the breadth of impact: environmental (reducing food waste), social (uniting families across cultures), and educational (teaching sustainable cooking practices to children and parents).
Maria-Gabriele Doublesin, President of NWAMI International Malta, commented: “We are deeply honoured that Foodwise Families has been recognised with the very first National Sustainable Development Community Impact Award. This is a powerful affirmation that when diverse families come together, cooking and learning side-by-side, we don’t just reduce food waste. We also build bridges across cultures, foster respect and inclusion, and lay the foundations for a more sustainable, united community in Malta. We hope this recognition inspires others to join us on this journey towards environmental responsibility and social cohesion.”
