“Neither society nor culture could exist without the other.” - UNESCO 2001

At NWAMI International Malta, we are dedicated to breaking down barriers and building
a brighter future by uniting people from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Our mission
is to transform the existing silo-culture by bridging socio-cultural divides. Through our
Culture and Community initiatives, we strive to foster friendships among individuals of
different sociocultural backgrounds, abilities, and ethnicities.

Our Culture & Community initiatives also aim to introduce international members to the
rich tapestry of Maltese culture and customs. By immersing them in Malta’s multicultural
fabric, we promote a deeper understanding and appreciation of local traditions.

With our community engagement efforts, we work to reduce social hurdles and enhance
mutual respect and understanding among Malta’s diverse population. Our goal is to help
each individual feel valued and respected within this vibrant society.
Meet Jane Paton, Honorary Head of Our Culture & Community Unit
The Culture & Community Unit is led by Jane Paton as the Honorary Head. Jane’s
extensive and diverse background makes her uniquely qualified for this role.
From her early childhood as a Scottish expatriate living in various countries, including
Pakistan, India, Singapore, Iran, and the UK, Jane developed a deep appreciation for
different cultures. Her passion for theatre and dance has been a constant thread
throughout her life, reflecting her belief in the power of cultural expression to bridge
divides.
Jane’s journey began with an early fascination with dance, which she views as a
powerful, non-verbal form of communication and a meditative escape. Her interests
extend to fabric and fashion, having founded an online business that marries
contemporary clothing with traditional Harris Tweed, a nod to her Scottish heritage. She
is eager to explore Maltese lace and its historical significance.
Her love for beauty and history has taken her to places like Persepolis in Iran, where the
ancient ruins stirred a profound connection to the past. This same passion drives her
enthusiasm for Malta’s rich heritage and cultural landscape.

Theatre, for Jane, is a vital form of communication that allows for the telling of epic
stories and the use of comedy to reflect on human nature. It’s a space for connection
and political expression, offering a unique way to understand and engage with the
world.

Jane’s multifaceted interests and experiences embody the spirit of NWAMI International
Malta’s Culture & Community Unit. Under her leadership, we look forward to exploring
and celebrating our cultural differences, breaking down barriers, and having fun in the
process.

Join us as we embark on this exciting journey of cultural exploration and community
building!
